Application Migration to Cloud
Moved a business-critical on-premise application to the cloud with a planned cutover, automated deployments and lower running costs.
The challenge
The client ran its core business application on ageing on-premise servers. Hardware was nearing end of life, releases were manual and risky, scaling for peak periods meant buying more servers, and there was no reliable disaster-recovery plan.
Our solution
We ran a structured assess → plan → migrate → optimise programme:
- Assessment: mapped every application component, database, integration and dependency, and chose the right approach for each (rehost, replatform or refactor).
- Landing zone: set up a secure cloud foundation with separate environments, network isolation, role-based access and encrypted storage.
- Data migration: moved databases with replication and verification, so the final cutover window was short and planned in advance.
- Modernisation: containerised the application, added load balancing and auto-scaling, and moved files to managed object storage.
- DevOps: introduced CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, automated backups, monitoring and alerting.
- Handover: runbooks, documentation and training for the client's IT team.
Technology: AWS / Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions, PostgreSQL, CloudWatch / Grafana.
Results
- Business application running in the cloud after a planned weekend cutover
- Automated, repeatable releases instead of manual deployments
- Scales up for busy periods and down when quiet, so the client pays only for what it uses
- Daily automated backups and a tested disaster-recovery plan
- No more spending on server hardware refreshes
